Blackberries (Rubus fruticosus agg.) belong to the rose family and have been valued in European botany and nutrition for centuries.

They are particularly characterised by their natural plant compounds:

• Anthocyanins: Natural plant pigments that give blackberries their intense dark purple colour.

• Polyphenols: A variety of secondary plant compounds.

• Ellagic acid and ellagitannins: Characteristic components of the blackberry.
